Animal By-Product Testing

Contact us

Eurofins Food Testing UK Ltd’s UKAS No. 9659 and 2262 accredited laboratories provide animal by-products (ABPs) testing using methods detailed in the Animal By-Products Regulations (ABPR). Accredited microbiological analysis is available for Salmonella, Enterobacteriaceae, Clostridium perfringens and Escherichia coli, supporting a broad range of routine commercial testing requirements under the ABPR.

Our UKAS accreditations demonstrate technical competence and capacity to support ABP testing programmes in line with current regulatory expectations and industry best practice.

What are Animal By-Products (ABPs)?

Animal by-products are materials of animal origin not intended for human consumption, even where the material itself may be edible. This includes whole animals or carcasses, parts of animals, and other animal-derived materials, such as slaughterhouse by-products.

ABPs are generated across a wide range of industry sectors, including pet food and animal feed manufacturing, blood and milk processing, anaerobic digestion for energy generation, fertiliser production, biodiesel manufacture, and landfill operations.

They are divided into 3 risk categories, dependent on where the carcass originated from and the risk they pose to human or animal health. Regulatory controls and microbiological testing requirements vary depend on the ABP category and intended use. Microbiological testing is essential under ABPR for ensuring the safety of these products and reducing the risk to human/animal health and plant hygiene.

Comprehensive testing services

We offer accredited ABPR and related non-ABPR testing, including for government-backed schemes such as the Feed Materials Assurance Scheme (FEMAS – ensuring animal feedstuffs are contaminant-free) and standards supporting the safety of composted materials, such as PAS 100.

Our services include

  • UKAS accredited ABPR testing

  • UKAS accredited non-ABPR microbiology testing (e.g. pet food)

  • UKAS accredited and DEFRA approved under the Control of Salmonella in Poultry Order (CSPO) regulation

  • Chemistry testing, including proximate analysis

  • Meat species testing using qualitative or semi-quantitative methods based on real-time PCR, DNA sequencing, and ELISA

  • Vitamin and amino acid analysis

  • Mineral content testing

  • Contaminant testing

  • Testing to FEDIAF guidelines

  • Testing to PAS 100 & PAS 110

Chemistry

We work in conjunction with Eurofins Agro UK Ltd to offer a range of services.

The Publicly Available Specification 100 (BSI PAS 100) for composted materials developed by the Association for Organics Recycling (AFOR) is the minimum specification that composted materials must meet. It is a way of evaluating the safety, reliability and consistency of compost. This is required in order to achieve the independently verified Compost Certification Scheme.

Additionally, Eurofins network of companies offers accredited testing for Government-backed schemes such as the Feed Materials Assurance Scheme; ensuring animal feed stuffs are contaminant-free, and PAS 100, ensuring the safety of composted materials.

Eurofins companies can also offer

Accredited non ABPR chemistry and microbiology testing on pet food Meat Species Testing via qualitative or semi-quantitative tests on the basis of Real-Time PCR and DNA sequencing as well as ELISA
Vitamin and amino acid analysis Testing to FEDIAF guidelines
