New analyses for detection of UV initiators (Benzophenone, 4-Methylbenzophenone and 4-Hydroxybenzophenone)

The European Commission has set a maximum level for food packaging printed with inks containing 4-Methylbenzophenone or Benzophenone after it was found the potentially cancerous chemical was being used on some breakfast cereal boxes.
Food contact materials printed with inks containing 4-Methylbenzophenone or Benzophenone should not be brought in contact with foods unless it is demonstrated in the company's in-house documentation that the transfer into food of the sum of 4-Methylbenzophenone and Benzophenone is below 0.6 mg per kg food.
At the request of the European Commission, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is carrying out a risk assessment on 4-Methylbenzophenone and is reviewing the risk assessment on Benzophenone.  EFSA expects to deliver its final opinion no later than May 2009.
Eurofins can provide analysis of Benzophenone, 4-Methylbenzophenone and 4-Hydroxybenzophenone in both food and packaging.

Dioxin Analysis at Eurofins Laboratories

On December 6 the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) announced a recall of all Irish pork products slaughtered after 1 September. These pork products potentially contain levels of dioxins in excess of the levels permitted by Commission Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006.  This product recall has been launched as a result of dioxins detected during routine laboratory testing. The latest information released indicates that the contamination has arisen from a contaminated feed supplied to ten Irish farms. Eurofins offer an accredited dioxin analysis using HR GC-MS/MS. Melamine Testing at Eurofins Laboratories

Melamine contamination of Chinese food products has resulted in increased controls and testing of imported food ingredients.  The EU has banned imports of Chinese milk powder and, in the UK, no baby milk products can be manufactured using Chinese milk or milk products. In addition, the EU has announced that imported goods containing more than 15% milk powder from China and products already on sale in the EU will face random tests. Eurofins Laboratories offer accredited testing for all product types using the latest GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS technology. For further information please call Customer Services on 01902-693314 or email info@eurofins.co.uk
