Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)

PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals”, continue to receive significant attention across the UK due to their persistence in the environment and potential risks to water quality, food safety and waste management systems. Increasing regulatory scrutiny and monitoring expectations are shaping government policy and industry response, including ongoing UK risk assessments and evolving management approaches for PFAS in drinking water and environmental matrices. As highlighted in last month’s update on the EU Drinking Water Directive, mandatory PFAS monitoring requirements are now in force in Northern Ireland, reflecting wider European efforts to strengthen public health protection.

Eurofins Water Hygiene Testing UK supports organisations with accredited and high-sensitivity PFAS analysis across water systems, helping demonstrate due diligence, support compliance objectives and prepare for future regulatory developments.

UK Government PFAS plan | Building a safer future

The UK government has published its updated PFAS Plan, setting out a long term, science led approach to managing risks from so called “forever chemicals”.
The plan focuses on understanding PFAS sources, tackling how they move through the environment, reducing ongoing exposure, and supporting a transition to safer alternatives while protecting public health, the environment, and economic growth.
