Eurofins offers accredited analysis of microplastics and tyre wear rubber in water, carried out by our expert team at the Eurofins Microplastics Competence Centre in Europe. This service supports UK clients with high-quality, reliable testing using Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (Pyr-GC/MS).
Advanced Pyr-GC/MS methodology for Microplastic testing
Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry enables mass quantification of synthetic polymers and rubber materials. This includes microplastic types such as polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), PVC, PET and nylon, as well as rubber compounds like natural rubber (NR), SBR, and BR.
Unlike particle-counting methods such as μ-FTIR or μ-Raman, Pyr-GC/MS is highly effective on complex matrices with high levels of particulates and organics, making it suitable for environmental and wastewater samples.
Sample types accepted
- Drinking water
- Wastewater
- Sea water and clean water
- Rinse water
- Bespoke requests
Polymers and rubber types detected
We provide quantified results in µg/L for individual polymers and tyre-derived rubber types, including a total microplastics value.
Sampling and submission guidance
Please submit 2 x 1 L water samples and 1 blank container per sample batch. Avoid polymer contamination during sampling by wearing natural fibre clothing and rinsing containers before use. No cooling or preservatives are required during shipment.
