Eurofins Food Testing UK Ltd, in partnership with Eurofins competence centres provides testing services for vitamins; minerals and amino acids to help manufacturers and retailers meet legal requirements and support accurate labelling across the UK and EU. Regulations differ between the European Union, Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
European Union*
Key frameworks include
-
Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers; sets the mandatory nutrition declaration and presentation rules
-
Regulation (EC) 1925/2006 on the addition of vitamins and minerals and of certain other substances to foods; harmonises addition of vitamins and minerals; “other substances” such as amino acids are not fully harmonised and may be subject to national measures
-
Regulation (EC) 1924/2006 on nutrition and health claims; conditions of use must be met for any permitted claim
-
Directive 2002/46/EC on food supplements; harmonises vitamins and minerals used in supplements and sets supplement-specific labelling rules
-
Foods for specific groups; Regulation (EU) 609/2013 and delegated rules for infant formula and food for special medical purposes (FSMP) define product-specific composition and information
Note; minimum or maximum levels may apply under product-specific legislation or national measures; always confirm the position for your target market before finalising labels.
Great Britain*
EU-derived provisions are retained in domestic law and may be amended by UK legislation and guidance. GB operates the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register; permitted sources and compositional limits may diverge over time. Businesses should check current Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) guidance and any GB-specific measures.
Northern Ireland*
Under the Windsor Framework, EU food law applies in NI for goods placed on the NI market; NI continues to use the EU Register for claims. Businesses trading between GB and NI should plan for potential divergence.
