Amino Acid Testing in Food

Contact us

Eurofins Food Testing UK, in partnership with our Eurofins competence centres, provides accredited amino acid testing to support food manufacturers, retailers, and brand owners in verifying protein quality, meeting UK and EU nutrition labelling requirements, and optimising product formulations. Our laboratories use state-of-the-art analytical methods to quantify both essential and non-essential amino acids.

What are amino acids?

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. They are classified as

  • Essential amino acids are those that must be obtained from the diet; for example lysine, methionine, tryptophan and valine. The exact set and required intakes vary by life stage and species. In humans, infants’ needs differ from those of adults; in animals, requirements are species specific.

  • Non essential amino acids; for example alanine, glutamic acid and serine, which the human body can synthesise itself

Why test for amino acids?

  • Comply with UK and EU food labelling regulations

  • Verify nutritional claims for amino acids content and quality

  • Support product development and reformulation

  • Ensure product consistency and quality control

Amino acid testing capabilities

Our laboratories offer analysis of all key amino acids including

  • Essential amino acids; lysine, methionine, threonine, tryptophan, leucine, isoleucine, valine, phenylalanine, histidine

  • Non-essential amino acids; alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamic acid, glycine, proline, serine, tyrosine

  • Amino acid profiling / content; each amino acid quantified individually by weight g/100g

Methods and instrumentation

We use advanced chromatographic techniques such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC) with pre- and post-column derivatisation to ensure precise quantification and reproducibility.

Regulatory alignment; methods developed to reflect current UK and EU standards and industry best practice.
