NEW | PFAS testing in wine

Contact us

From our PFAS Competence Centre at Eurofins Food & Feed Testing Sweden, Eurofins Food Testing UK can offer targeted testing for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), specifically Trifluoroacetic Acid (TFA) and related ultrashort-chain compounds, in wines.

This is following the release of a concerning new report from the PAN Network and Global 2000. The investigation revealed widespread TFA contamination in commercial wines, including both organic and conventional labels, with many samples exceeding national guideline values for drinking water.

Responding to growing concern about TFA

Traditionally monitored in drinking water, TFA is a persistent environmental contaminant that is increasingly being detected in everyday food and beverages. In addition to wine, ultrashort-chain PFAS compounds like TFA, TFMS, PFPrA and PFPrS have also been found in

  • Drinking water across continental Europe
  • Surface and ground waters
  • Fruit juices (especially orange and apple)
  • Hand-squeezed fruit products
  • Tea and beer

With over 45 pesticide substances in the EU known to degrade into TFA, and levels rising in precipitation globally, beverages are now more exposed than ever.

Why this matters for the wine industry

  • Protecting consumer trust: Widespread PFAS findings in wine could raise serious consumer concerns around product safety
  • Staying ahead of regulation: The EU Drinking Water Directive now includes total PFAS limits. Many in the scientific community are calling for these to explicitly account for TFA
  • Ensuring market access: Regulatory scrutiny is increasing across Europe, and producers and retailers will need robust data to demonstrate compliance

Eurofins support for wine producers, importers and retailers

Eurofins Food Testing UK now offers advanced analytical services for detecting ultrashort-chain PFAS, including TFA, in wine. Our laboratories use sensitive and validated methods capable of quantifying these compounds at trace levels, helping customers

  • Assess contamination risk
  • Support EU regulatory compliance
  • Protect brand reputation
  • Respond confidently to buyer and consumer queries
