In April 2005, the European Commission (EC) granted new authorisations for three genetically modified maize events, MON95275, MON94804 and DP910521, for use in food and feed within the European Union (EU). These approvals fall under the framework of Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003, which governs the authorisation, labelling and traceability of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) intended for human and animal consumption.
The authorisation process for a genetically modified organism in the EU is known for its thoroughness and complexity. Each application is rigorously assessed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and once approved, an authorisation is typically valid for ten years, after which it must be renewed. As different regulatory limits apply to individual GMO maize events in food and feed, maintaining oversight of their authorisation status is essential, particularly for single GMO events that are used across complex international supply chains.
This regulatory framework ensures ongoing compliance with EU food safety legislation, while supporting the safe handling and traceability of GMOs in global production and trade.
Eurofins CornScreenPlus - supporting compliance with evolving GMO maize testing requirements
With the number of authorised GMO maize events now approaching 50, keeping up with regulatory developments has become increasingly challenging for manufacturers, importers and food producers. In response, Eurofins Food Testing UK has introduced CornScreenPlus, a next-generation testing package designed specifically for genetically modified corn, offered through our GMO competence centre in Germany, Eurofins GeneScan GmbH.
CornScreenPlus offers a robust and intelligent solution to modern GMO maize testing by integrating the latest mo-pat gene screening with targeted, event-specific assays. This allows for highly efficient identification of a broad range of authorised maize events, helping businesses demonstrate regulatory compliance and strengthen quality assurance processes.
Whether you're managing raw material risk, validating labelling claims, or importing feed ingredients into the EU market, CornScreenPlus provides confidence in your GMO testing strategy.
